Driving Forces of Green Roof Design

Green roofs serve several purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, increasing benevolence and decreasing stress of the people around the roof by providing a more aesthetically pleasing landscape, and helping to lower urban air temperatures and mitigate the heat island effect. Join us for this stimulating review of best green roof design practices including stormwater management and wind uplift, local codes and how they compare to other cities.

Julie Leavitt, GRP
Firestone SkyScape Program Director, Greenrise Technologies

Julie is a horticulturist who has been working in the green roof industry for the past 10 years.  She began her green roofing career working for a nursery growing plants used on green roofs but moved  to a roofer installing and estimating the systems.  Now after years of seeing all sides of the industry she manages a membrane manufacturer’s vegetative program.  This allows her to work with all the key players in green roof design from architects, installers and code officials.  She is active with Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and is a “Green Roof Professional”.  She is also active with IIBEC (formerly RCI) and teaches their Vegetative Roofing class each year.
